Abbott Panthers’ Coach Kyle Crawford Talks Thanksgiving Football, Playoff Mindset, and Six-Man Pride

Thanksgiving and Texas high school football—a pairing as classic as turkey and stuffing. For Coach Kyle Crawford of the Abbott Panthers, this week is extra special as his team prepares for a third-round playoff matchup. We sat down with Coach Crawford to discuss his first season as head coach, the excitement around playoff football, and the unique culture of six-man football in Texas.

Thanksgiving Week: Football and Family

“It’s always a blessing to be playing Thanksgiving football,” said Crawford, reflecting on the excitement surrounding playoff week. For the Crawford household, the holiday is all about family and football. “I’ve got two little boys, ages five and three, who love this time of year. Seeing their excitement makes it even more special.”

Abbott’s playoff journey has been fueled by a hunger for success, a drive built on lessons learned from last year’s quarterfinal loss to Gordon, the eventual state champion. “The expectation in Abbott isn’t just making the third round—it’s a state title,” Crawford shared. “Our experienced group came in motivated, and now we’re focused on getting better every day.”

Taking the Reins as Head Coach

Crawford stepped into the head coaching role this season after serving as defensive coordinator under his father, Coach Terry Crawford, a beloved figure in the Abbott community. “It’s been awesome,” Kyle said. “I was born and raised here, and my dad spent his entire career coaching in Abbott. This is home, and I feel deeply connected to the community.” Despite the new title, Crawford credits the seamless transition to his father’s leadership. “Dad always encouraged his coaches to think and act like head coaches, so the shift hasn’t felt drastic,” he explained. “It’s been a lot of fun leading this team and community I care so much about.”

Dual Success in Football and Baseball

In addition to football, Crawford also leads Abbott’s baseball team, which won a state title in 2023 and returned to the tournament in 2024. When asked what it would mean to replicate that success on the football field, Crawford emphasized the community’s role. “It’s not about me—it’s about these kids and this community,” Crawford said. “Abbott is a special place with high expectations, not just in athletics but in academics and character. Our new stadium is a testament to the incredible support we receive, and we’re working to make everyone proud.”

Facing Aquilla: Staying Hungry

This Friday, Abbott faces district rival Aquilla in a high-stakes rematch. While Abbott won their regular-season matchup convincingly, Crawford stressed the importance of staying focused. “It’s the state quarterfinals—what you did the first time doesn’t matter,” he said. “We’ve cleaned the slate and are preparing for the best version of Aquilla.” Crawford’s process-oriented philosophy is clear: “Being elite requires a different level of work and commitment. That’s what we preach to our kids every day.”

Six-Man Football: A Texas Tradition

For those unfamiliar with six-man football, Crawford offered an enthusiastic endorsement. “It’s still football—you block, tackle, and compete just like 11-man,” he said. “There’s a lot of talent in this game, and it’s a vital part of small communities like Abbott. The elite teams at this stage are as disciplined and skilled as any in the state.”

Building Better People Through Sports

As Crawford wrapped up our conversation, he shared a sentiment that transcends football: “We’re here to set these kids up for success beyond high school. Winning is important, but the ultimate goal is to help them become better people and make a positive impact in the world.” This Friday, the Abbott Panthers take the field with their sights set on a state semifinal berth. For Coach Crawford, Thanksgiving football is more than a game—it’s an opportunity to bring a community together and continue a tradition of excellence. Best of luck to the Panthers as they chase their championship dreams!
