In one of the nicest basketball arenas I have been to, I witnessed Glen Rose basketball for the first time. Glen Rose, Texas, is about an hour and thirty minutes southwest from Dallas, nestled by the Brazos River. With a population of around 2,659 people, there is probably a lot the community has in common.
However, there is one value that I know they all share, the love for their Glen Rose Tigers. Hundreds of fans gathered to support the Lady Tigers as they beat Stephenville 52-23 to cap off a phenomenal regular season going 29-3. The Lady Tigers are confident they are a San Antonio team.
As I went to the back of the arena, I found them celebrating their head coach Ramsey Gahazal’s birthday, the first of many possible celebrations to come. I also met senior Grace Booth, who is fairly new to the community of Glen Rose. She had quite the game that day, scoring 24 points, 9 rebounds, 6 deflections, and 2 steals.
I asked her how she felt after having such a big game on a big night. With humility, she gave a shout-out to her community for their continued support, “The community is so different, and I love how they show up every single game, love us, and cheer us on.”
Grace is confident that her community will travel with the Lady Tigers throughout the playoffs, all the way to San Antonio - the goal for every Texas high school basketball team. Grace’s senior leadership is evident as the bi-district playoffs start in less than a week. “We have to practice like every game is our last game; our goal is to practice hard every single game.”
4A basketball in Texas is no joke in the post-season. Teams like Waco La Vega, Canyon, and Decatur have their sights set on San Antonio.
